Agentic advertising
Media buying and selling in which AI agents carry out tasks on behalf of advertisers and publishers within set limits.
What is agentic advertising?
Agentic advertising describes an emerging way of planning and transacting media in which AI agents take on multi-step tasks, such as interpreting a brief, finding suitable inventory, negotiating terms and adjusting delivery, rather than only following fixed rules. Agents act on behalf of a principal, typically an advertiser, agency or publisher, and work within budgets, policies and approval steps that people set. The approach builds on existing programmatic infrastructure and adds agent protocols such as A2A and MCP so software can communicate and use tools. Industry standards and production use are still developing.
How agentic advertising works
A buyer agent interprets an advertiser’s goal and constraints, queries seller agents for inventory and terms, and proposes or executes a plan. A seller agent answers on behalf of a publisher using the publisher’s rules.
- A person defines the objective, budget, audience, brand rules and the points where approval is required.
- A buyer agent translates that brief into structured requirements and queries seller agents or inventory sources.
- Seller agents respond with available packages, pricing and conditions based on publisher rules.
- The buyer agent compares options and presents a recommended plan for human review.
- Once approved, the deals are activated through existing programmatic channels and the agents monitor and report on delivery.
Why it matters
It shortens the path from brief to live campaign and makes inventory discoverable to software, not only to people. Human approval remains part of the process.
For advertisers
Agents can compress the research and negotiation work between a brief and a live campaign, while humans keep control of goals and sign-off.
For publishers
A seller agent can make inventory, packages and pricing rules visible to automated buyers that might otherwise never find them.
For agencies
Teams can spend less time on repetitive requests for proposals and more on strategy, though they need governance over what agents may commit.
Practical example
An advertiser states a budget, audience and outcome; an agent returns a plan across several publishers for approval.
Traditional programmatic and agentic advertising
Agentic advertising builds on programmatic rather than replacing it. Agents work through the same exchanges, deals and transparency files; what changes is who carries out the tasks.
| Aspect | Traditional programmatic | Agentic advertising |
|---|---|---|
| Who does the work | People plan, set up and adjust campaigns in buying and selling platforms. | Software agents carry out defined tasks, such as finding inventory or proposing terms, for a person who sets the goal. |
| How inventory is found | Buyers search platforms, run auctions or agree deals through sales conversations. | Buyer agents query seller agents for inventory that matches a brief. |
| How terms are agreed | Open auction bids, or deal terms negotiated by people and set up as a deal ID. | Agents exchange proposals within limits each side has set; people approve the result. |
| Standards | Established: OpenRTB, ads.txt, sellers.json, deal IDs. | Emerging: agent protocols such as MCP and A2A, used alongside the existing standards. |
| Maturity | Established and in wide use. | Early. At Vertoz, Agentic Buying and Agentic Selling are in early access. |
Key considerations
- Guardrails such as spending limits, approved partners and mandatory approvals are needed before an agent can commit budget.
- Decisions should be explainable and logged so teams can audit why an agent chose a given plan.
- Interoperability depends on shared protocols, which are still maturing across the industry.
- Agent output is only as good as the inventory data, taxonomies and rules it can access.

Frequently asked questions
Is agentic advertising available from Vertoz today?
Agentic Buying and Agentic Selling are in early access. See Agentic Advertising.
How does agentic advertising differ from traditional programmatic advertising?
Traditional programmatic, which is well established today, automates the bidding on individual impressions using rules and models that people configure in DSPs and SSPs. Agentic advertising is emerging and adds AI agents that handle broader tasks such as planning, discovery and negotiation, usually running on top of those same programmatic pipes.
Do agents remove people from media buying?
No. In current approaches people set objectives and constraints and approve plans; agents handle the research and repetitive steps in between.
What protocols are used?
Agent-to-agent protocols such as A2A and tool protocols such as MCP are commonly discussed, alongside existing standards like OpenRTB for delivery.
