Programmatic advertising

The automated buying and selling of advertising using software and data.

What is programmatic advertising?

Programmatic advertising is the established way digital media is bought and sold through automated platforms. Advertisers and agencies use demand-side platforms, publishers use supply-side platforms, and the two connect through exchanges using standards such as OpenRTB. Trading can happen in the open auction, in private marketplaces or through programmatic guaranteed deals, across display, video, native, audio, in-app, CTV and digital out-of-home. Software evaluates each impression and decides whether to bid and how much, using targeting rules, data and campaign goals set by people. Programmatic is now the default for much digital media, and it is the foundation on which newer agentic approaches are being built.

How programmatic advertising works

Buyers define audiences, budgets and bids; sellers make inventory available; platforms match the two impression by impression.

  1. A publisher makes an ad slot available through its SSP, with floors and rules attached.
  2. When a user loads the page, app or stream, a bid request describing the impression is sent to buyers through exchanges or deals.
  3. Each DSP checks the request against its campaigns’ targeting and budget and decides whether and what to bid.
  4. The winning bid is selected, the ad is served, and delivery and performance data flow back to both sides.

Why it matters

It replaces manual negotiation with speed, scale and measurable control.

For advertisers

One platform can reach audiences across many publishers and channels with consistent targeting, frequency control and reporting.

For publishers

Programmatic connects inventory to a far larger pool of buyers than a direct sales team could reach on its own.

For agencies

Agencies can run and optimise many client campaigns through common tools and deal types rather than separate insertion orders.

Practical example

Hypothetical example

An advertiser reaches the same audience across thousands of sites through one campaign.

Traditional programmatic and agentic advertising

Agentic advertising builds on programmatic rather than replacing it. Agents work through the same exchanges, deals and transparency files; what changes is who carries out the tasks.

Key considerations

  • Multiple intermediaries can take fees along the supply chain, so buyers use ads.txt, sellers.json and supply path optimisation to buy more directly.
  • Automated buying needs active safeguards against invalid traffic and unsuitable placements.
  • Privacy rules and the decline of third-party identifiers are pushing programmatic towards contextual and first-party data.

Frequently asked questions

Is programmatic advertising the same as RTB?

No. RTB is one way of transacting programmatically; programmatic also includes fixed-price and guaranteed deals that do not involve an open auction.

What is the difference between traditional programmatic advertising and agentic advertising?

Traditional programmatic is established today: people plan campaigns, negotiate deals and set rules, and software executes bidding at scale. Agentic advertising is emerging: AI agents acting for buyers and sellers take on more of the planning, discovery and negotiation steps themselves, usually still working through programmatic deals and pipes, with standards and products at an early stage.

Which channels can be bought programmatically?

Display, native, video, audio, in-app, CTV and many digital out-of-home screens are all commonly traded programmatically.

Does Vertoz offer programmatic advertising?

Yes. Advertisers can buy programmatic media through IngeniousPlex, and publishers can sell inventory programmatically through IncrementX.
