Curated inventory

Inventory from one or more publishers grouped into a package around an audience, context or moment and offered to buyers under one deal.

What is curated inventory?

Curated inventory is a selection of ad placements, usually drawn from several publishers or apps, that has been assembled around a specific buyer need and sold as one product. The organizing principle might be an audience segment, a content theme, a format, a geography or quality thresholds such as viewability. Curators can be sell-side platforms, publisher representatives, data providers or agencies. The package is typically delivered as a PMP or similar deal so buyers activate it with a single deal ID. Curation has grown as buyers seek scale without the noise of the open auction.

How curated inventory works

A curator selects the placements, applies any audience or quality criteria and makes the package available through a deal identifier.

  1. The curator defines the package goal, such as an audience, context or quality standard.
  2. Eligible placements are selected from participating publishers and filtered for quality.
  3. Audience or contextual data may be applied to narrow the inventory further.
  4. The package is set up as a deal with pricing rules and a single deal ID.
  5. Buyers activate the deal in their DSP and the curator monitors delivery and performance.

Why it matters

Buyers reach a defined audience without negotiating with each publisher. Publishers gain demand they might not have reached alone.

For advertisers

Curated packages offer predictable environments and audiences at scale with one setup rather than many separate negotiations.

For publishers

Inclusion in curated packages can bring in buyers that only purchase through deals, often at higher prices than the open auction.

For agencies

Curation simplifies planning by bundling quality controls and data into a ready-to-activate product.

Practical example

Hypothetical example

Several community-language publishers are grouped into one package for a festive-season campaign.

Key considerations

  • Buyers should understand which publishers are included and how the package is assembled.
  • Curation fees add a layer of cost, so the value of the selection and data should justify it.
  • Package scale can vary over time as publisher inventory changes.

Frequently asked questions

Who can curate inventory?

SSPs, publisher representatives, data companies and agencies all curate packages, depending on who has the supply and data relationships.

How is curated inventory different from a PMP?

A PMP is the deal mechanism; curated inventory describes the selection process, which is often delivered through a PMP.

Does curation use audience data?

It can. Some packages rely on contextual or quality criteria only, while others apply first-party or third-party audience data.
